Innovation,
imagination and good practice
At Generate
we pride ourselves on our ability to think outside the box.
Over the years we have developed a number of new initiatives
benefiting people with learning difficulties, their families,
their professional support networks, and the community as a
whole. We actively involve our members in the design and implementation
of new projects, often as paid workers.

Our
Health Matters Project looked at ways people with learning difficulties
could increase their access to mainstream health services. Funded
by Social Services and the Primary Care Trust, we ran workshops
at GP surgeries to increase staff awareness of learning difficulties.
We have developed a training CD to help get the message across
and produced accessible health and appointment cards for our
members. In addition, St. George's Hospital have employed three
of our members as accessibility advisers focusing on a number
of different areas within the hospital.

We
are about to launch a national project, with support from the
Department of Health, aimed at improving people's access to
accessible health information.

Funded
by the Co-operative Bank, we have carried out a research project
to find out about the issues our members face in opening bank
accounts, and their experiences of using banks in general. The
project looks like it will form the foundation for further work
looking at a broad range of access and training issues.

Many
of our members in their 30s and 40s still live at home with
their elderly parents. In 2001 we carried out a research project
looking at the hopes and fears of members and parents facing
up to the day when the parents would no longer be able to support
their son or daughter in the family home. Funded by the Foundation
for People with Learning Disabilities, our completed report
has helped to shape the way we work with families, and has been
made available to organizations throughout the country.

Funded by the Single Regeneration Budget, our Connexions Buddy
Scheme links young disabled people with Generate buddies on
a short-term basis to help facilitate access to mainstream services,
including leisure, community and youth facilities, employment,
training and education.

Our
Members' Committee has been running for a number of years. With
new funding from Lloyds TSB, Children in Need and the Gannet
Foundation we are working with the committee to make their newsletter
more accessible. The funding also supports members to improve
their skills in working as a committee and facilitate ways for
increased user involvement throughout Generate.
